Since its inception, the United Nations has been closely connected to Rotary International and its ideals. 
In 1942, in the midst of World War ll, Rotary convened a conference in London that succeeded in in assembling ministers of education and observers of 21 governments — many of them in exile in London — for the purpose of considering the organization of a vast educational and cultural exchange after the conclusion of the war.
 
Later that same year the group began laying plans for UNESCO and thus, literally, the United Nations was born.
